The Diamond Earring Conspiracy
It’s a Desert Diamond Kind of Mother’s Day
Sally Spencer (with Debbie Oakes).
Hi Everyone!
For those who don’t know me, my name is Sally Spencer. I’m the owner of Desert Diamonds. I’ve been bringing sparkle to lives of women all over the planet since 1992. I would like to welcome you to my new blog! In keeping with a fine tradition, I hope to add shine in these reflections on life, the Universe… and all that glitters.
Mother’s Day
It’s an auspicious, if somewhat emotional first blog – Mother’s Day!
For me it’s a particularly difficult one this year. Both as a Mother and as a daughter I feel the pain of separation keenly. If you had said this time last March that another full year would pass before I could pour my Mum a glass of wine, I would have been absolutely mortified. Although we have lived in different countries now for many years (I’m now in France and mum in Australia – we couldn’t be further apart!), we have always managed to see each other. And the same is true for my beautiful son & daughter (both in England) it’s been over a year now since I could last hug them and smell them… it’s so hard.
Feeling nostalgic, I would like to share a little bitter sweet story with you of our Mother’s Day tradition that started somewhat ignominiously…
Earring Envy
Everyday after school Fiona, my best friend and I, would go to David Jones Department store. And while the other kids were smoking behind the gym, we went straight to the rotating earring stand. We would pick out which ones we would try first, which ones we would get married in, which ones we would wear to school, which ones we would wear to the the disco. If only we were allowed those elusive earring holes! There were diamond stud earrings, pearl earrings, hoop earrings, stylish earrings, drop earrings, sparkly earrings all in beautiful different shapes and sizes!
Earring Rebellion
No amount of whinging would dent in my Mother’s resolve. “You can do what you like when you leave home”, was her irritating refrain.
So, there really was nothing for it. Fiona and I resolved to do it ourselves. We saved up enough pocket money to get some cheap diamante studs. I remember they came in a mini-Ziplock bag. They were just small enough to hide from our Mums (we figured) and just big enough to be seen by the girls in the class and the latest crush. Fiona brought a safety pin from home and I brought in my Mother’s lighter to sterilise the tip (it seemed like justice). The lunch bell rang. We headed straight to the girl’s toilets. My earlobes are pretty thin. Which is something I had never noticed before… and really it wasn’t until half way though our painful tear-jerking DIY piercing job that I noticed Fiona had quite fat lobes. I didn’t want to mention it as I was feeling rather faint at the time.
I will spare you the excruciating intricacies of how Fiona and I finally became wearers of David Jones cheapest hypo-allergenic diamantes. Needless to say I still cringe to think about it to this day. But the biggest hurdle was yet to come – my mother.
Earrings Revealed
I religiously wore my hair down; so I guess about two weeks passed before a diamante glimmer caught my Mother’s eye. Those two weeks were wrought with anxiety – to keep my ears from my Mother’s gaze – and pain from the infection that inevitably set in. Those two weeks, I believe, were the birthplace of Desert Diamonds. I like to think that if Fiona and I had access to fantastic quality well-priced earrings we would not have had sore, swollen lobes (even mine were fat!) My mother’s face dropped when she saw them. A thousand emotions seemed to Rolodex over her at the same time; as if she could not quite decide which one to settle on: Anger? Horror? Disappointment?
“Sally! What have you done?” She whispered through strained vocal chords.
“Sorry Mum!” I started to cry. And as she came up close she saw how infected they were. Finally, her face settled upon one emotion: love. (With large helpings of patience and resignation I am certain)
Mother’s Day Earrings
It wasn’t until I became a Mother myself that I could understand why she chose to forgive me that day. To lovingly help me clean my throbbing lobes instead of clipping me around them! I couldn’t believe it when a few years later she decided to take the plunge herself. In order to wear her very own Desert Diamond studs she got her ears pierced. She apparently like them so much that she then got her ears pierced a second time – so now she gets two different Desert Diamond earrings every Mothers Day!
My Mum’s not just a pretty face…
So, in honour of my Mum – of all Mums we miss so much this Mother’s Day 14th March I have two suggestions:

Just love your story. – similar to mine but that I only got as far as doing one ear !! So fir a year had just one earring. To hide from my mum but that was quit easy as I was at boarding school. Then when sticking a needle through yet another friends ear I did decide to do my other ear and a second on the first ear. I don’t remember my mother ever making a comment!! But fir a year I had lots of different earrings as every one gave Thur odd ones as they where always loosing just one. 😃
